Multi Engine Command Instrument Ratings

The Multi-Engine IFR Rating allows you to fly under the Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). This rating is a must for any serious Commercial Pilot License holder seeking to work in the industry. Whilst flying under the IFR should not be considered a right to fly in any and in all bad weather conditions, it provides you with the flexibility and skills to depart and arrive at aerodromes when weather is marginal. This rating can be added to a Private or higher category License. For those seeking to only fly single engine aircraft a Single Engine Instrument Rating can be undertaken.

Minimum Requirements

  • Have passed the IREX (Instrument Rating Theory) Exam
  • Hold at least a Private Pilot License
  • Hold a current Aviation Class 2 Medical
  • Completed at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command
  • Completed 6 hours night flying of which 1 hour must be solo night circuits
  • Completed a course comprising 40 hours of instrument time (including 20 hours minimum in flight)

On Completion

On completion of your training an Approved Testing Officer will assess your knowledge of the Instrument Flight Rules and conduct a flight test of your instrument flying skills. Your license will then be endorsed with either a Single or Multi-Engine Command Instrument Rating.
